On October 19, 2026, US spot Bitcoin (BTC) ETFs took in $526.7 million while spot Ether (ETH) ETFs lost $103.3 million, per Farside Investors. Across October 5 to 21, 2026, BTC funds netted +$167.4 million and ETH funds netted -$976.8 million (both derived from Farside daily totals).

What do the October 2026 flows show?

Farside Investors publishes the daily record for both fund groups. Our post on the October 19 inflow showed BlackRock's IBIT taking in $665.2 million while Ether funds had their fourth straight outflow day. The table below puts both fund groups side by side.

Date BTC ETFs (US$m) ETH ETFs (US$m)
October 12, 2026 -65.4 -85.4
October 13, 2026 175.7 24.8
October 14, 2026 -261.4 -129.5
October 15, 2026 5.1 -60.3
October 16, 2026 -82.4 -69.7
October 19, 2026 526.7 -103.3

October 21, 2026 524.8 14.9

Source: Farside Investors, Bitcoin ETF flows and Ether ETF flows, read October 22, 2026. Negative figures are net outflows. Flows are as of October 21, 2026 and can be revised.

The two groups moved in the same direction on 8 of the 13 sessions from October 5 to October 21, 2026, and in opposite directions on 5 (derived by comparing daily signs). BTC funds had seven up days in that window and ETH funds had two (derived). The largest gap was October 19, 2026.

On October 21, 2026, FinanceFeeds, citing Farside, lists IBIT at +$235.0 million and Fidelity's FBTC at +$212.7 million for Bitcoin. For Ether it lists BlackRock's ETHA at -$29.3 million, Fidelity's FETH at +$13.0 million and Grayscale's Ethereum Mini Trust at +$28.1 million. The Ether total turned positive only because smaller funds offset ETHA.

Where analysts disagree

The sources read for this explainer name no analyst who argues a view on Ether versus Bitcoin flows, so we do not invent one. The disagreement that can be shown is in the measurement.

Cointelegraph and Cryptopolitan, both citing SoSoValue, report net Ether ETF outflows of $1.08 billion from the start of October through October 20, 2026. Farside's October table, which starts on October 5, sums to -$991.7 million for October 5 to 20, 2026 (derived). The gap is about $88 million (derived). It could come from the sessions on October 1 and 2 that the Farside table read here does not show, or from provider differences. The pages do not say which.

A second gap is one of sign. Cointelegraph says Ether ETFs added $26 million on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Farside shows -$26.1 million for that date. Farside is the primary flow record used here, but the conflict is unresolved, so any October total depends on which provider is used.

Readings of the same data also differ. One reading is that flows follow price: Ether fell, so holders redeemed. The other is that product mix matters more than direction, as ETHA's October 21, 2026 outflow was offset by other funds. The data fit both, and neither source tests them. Our post on whether the September rally was short covering or new demand covers the same ambiguity for Bitcoin.

Why it matters: why are Ether ETF flows smaller than Bitcoin's?

Scale is the first difference. Farside's Total row shows 58,024 (US$m) on the Bitcoin page and 12,854 (US$m) on the Ether page. Both rows appear to cover each table's full history, so the Bitcoin figure is about 4.5 times the Ether figure (derived by division, rounded to one decimal). The Farside page does not state the period of its summary rows, so treat the ratio as indicative.

Price is the second. Cryptopolitan attributes the October outflows to Ether's 9.7% fall in the month, and Cointelegraph puts ETH at $2,438 on October 21, 2026, down from $2,700. Neither article names an analyst. The link between price and flows is the writers' attribution, not a tested result, and our post on whether ETF flows move price shows flows and price can diverge.

Fund structure is the third. Cryptopolitan reports that Grayscale's ETHE has cumulative net outflows of $5.49 billion and links that to a switch to a more costly product, while ETHA holds $8.05 billion in net assets as of October 20, 2026. Old and new funds can move in opposite directions inside one total. The same pattern appeared on the Bitcoin side on October 19, 2026, when IBIT's inflow masked outflows elsewhere. For the Ether side of an earlier run, see our post on the seven-day Ether inflow streak that ended September 29, 2026.

What to watch

  • Farside's October 22 and October 23, 2026 rows for both pages: whether Ether turns positive for a second day.
  • Month-end October totals from Farside and SoSoValue: whether the roughly $88 million gap persists.
  • ETHA versus the smaller Ether funds: whether the October 21 split repeats.
  • Whether Bitcoin's IBIT inflows continue, or October 19 and October 21 stay isolated days.

Bottom line

  1. On October 19, 2026, Bitcoin ETFs took in $526.7 million and Ether ETFs lost $103.3 million (Farside).
  2. From October 5 to 21, 2026, Bitcoin funds netted +$167.4 million and Ether funds -$976.8 million (derived from Farside).
  3. Farside's totals imply Bitcoin ETF cumulative flows are about 4.5 times Ether's (derived, period unstated).
  4. Providers disagree on October Ether totals by about $88 million and on the sign of October 20, 2026, so cite the provider with the figure.
